    What value does a distributor bring to the Canadian health care supply chain?

    For Canadian health care providers, there are several benefits to dealing directly with a distributor:

    • Distributors have product in local supply. This leads to expedient delivery, reduced inventory levels and storage requirements for practitioners, and more space dedicated to clinical use;
    • Distributors aid in streamlining the supply chain. Consolidation of products and suppliers available through distribution reduces the number of touch points in the distribution channel. This results in fewer purchase orders, deliveries, receipts and invoices. Not to mention, easier accountability;
    • Distributors can leverage freight costs because they control their own fleet of delivery vehicles or negotiate rates with carriers based on their total throughput (economies of scale). The savings per unit can then be passed on to customers in terms of lower delivery costs;
    • Distributors offer timely and convenient e-Business options such as Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), online ordering, etc.;
    • Distributors offer built in contingency and business resumption plans to counter unforeseen disruptions in business (power failure, pandemic, etc.). Having multiple locations enables greater flexibility for order processing, storage and continuation of business processes.
    • Distributors provide a quarantine/release process for sterile products that arrive in Canada and must be tested before they are sold;
    • Distributors provide Regulatory teams to ensure all products are appropriately licensed with Health Canada before they are sold to customers;
    • Distributors have Customs and Duties teams to expediently move product across the border to Canadian customers.

    Medical Mart e-Commerce

    Robust e-Commerce solutions designed for today’s Health Care Providers

    Medical Mart offers Health Care Providers greater efficiency and cost-effectiveness through its collaborative communications solutions. For more than two decades, Medical Mart customers have enjoyed industry-leading EDI and e-Commerce solutions and the benefits for today’s fast-paced health care environment are tremendous. Providers experience timely purchasing and fulfillment of medical products, while remaining informed and up-to-date on current discounts, product inventories and new product offerings. Communication of product requirements is rapidly addressed by Medical Mart through one of the industry’s most robust and streamlined supply chains.

    Setting a Higher Standard for Communications

    As an active member of GS1 Canada—part of GS1, the world’s leading supply chain standards organization—Medical Mart has direct impact on the enhancement of communication standards being used across the health care industry. While the Medical Mart IT Team participates in defining the standards being implemented, Executive Vice President Rob West is a member of the GS1 Carenet Board.

    GS1 Canada’s primary role is to establish a single method of electronically communicating data between trading partners in the health care industry. This data ranges from the various EDI transactions (described below) to the unique identification of products and regions, to the implementation of a product registry—a single source of product information available to the public. Medical Mart’s participation and involvement with GS1 enables us to provide leading-edge communications solutions to our customers and vendors in health care.

    Increasing efficiency through Electronic Data Interchange (EDI)

    EDI is the business-to-business exchange of data. It is a method of electronic and automatic communication between the ERP systems of two separate trading partners. EDI provides the parties at both ends of the communication channel the ability to improve efficiency and virtually eliminate the daily processing errors common in a traditionally manual environment.

    Medical Mart has been an avid endorser and provider of EDI for over two decades. For twenty years, we have consistently upgraded our ERP systems, improving our ability to handle and produce transactions in 3010, 4010 and 6020 versions. As a member of GS1, we are constantly developing and adding EDI transaction sets to enhance service to our business partners. Here are the transactions currently handled through Medical Mart EDI:

    • 832 Price / Sales Catalog
    • 850 Purchase Order
    • 855 Purchase Order Acknowledgement
    • 997 Functional Acknowledgement
    • 810 Invoice
    • 820 Payment
    • 856 Advance Ship Notice

    These transactions provide added value to our customers, at no extra charge to our quality service of providing medical supplies.

    Online Ordering customized to meet the needs of your business

    As an alternative for customers that do not have an ERP system capable of handling EDI, Medical Mart can provide customized online ordering portals. These portals are loaded with products and pricing specific to a customer’s negotiated contract(s). This differs drastically from other online ordering modes, where by only a single generic set of items and pricing is made available to customers. These systems are just another one of the services offered by Medical Mart, aimed at building a collaborative environment to foster long-term reliable business relationships.
