When Robert G. West opened Medical Mart in 1978, he envisioned a company that could improve the delivery of care across the health care continuum. With over 15 years experience working for a large Canadian heath care supply house, Mr. West recognized an extraordinary opportunity in the health care market in the late 1970’s: the demand for customized service. Mr. West capitalized on this unique need, by laying the groundwork for an innovative, demand-driven distribution model, customized to meet the requirements of the health care provider.

To this day, Medical Mart carries on the tradition of provider-focussed service, which was initiated by our President over 30 years ago. Medical Mart has been providing innovative health care solutions to Canadians since my father started this company over 30 years ago. The health care industry has changed significantly since we opened our doors, and Medical Mart in turn, has grown to accommodate the diverse requirements of our valued customers.

While we still advocate the values of our founder and President, Robert G. West – those of integrity, honesty and collaboration in our business relationships – we have had to adapt to meet the burgeoning technological demands of our industry, as well as growing concerns with patient safety and infection control, to name a few. Meeting these changing requirements to ensure our customers can provide improved patient care has been both an exciting and rewarding process for our company.

Robert G. West
Robert G. West, began working in the health care industry in the early 1960s while studying the Medical and Surgical trade at the University of Indiana. He excelled in the acute care hospital and primary care physician settings for over 15 years prior to founding Medical Mart. Leveraging his leadership skills and commitment to reliable service, he transitioned from Sales Manager at Standard Hospital Supplies Ltd to Vice President and eventually onto the Board of Directors for Extendicare / Hartz Standard.

By the mid-seventies, Mr. West began to recognize an opportunity within the health care industry: the demand for reliable service, customized to meet the unique needs of the health care provider. With this vision and an already entrepreneurial spirit, Robert G. West opened Medical Mart in 1978 in the city of Mississauga, Ontario.

Mr. West’s industry insight combined with a service-oriented approach became the first links in a long chain of victories for the Medical Mart team. A focus on innovation, timely and reliable service and the distribution of high quality products has become the cornerstone of Medical Mart’s success today. Family-owned and operated, Medical Mart still celebrates the values of integrity, honesty and reliability, instilled by Robert G. West since the company opened its doors. To this day, these values serve as the foundation for the success of Medical Mart.

Mr. West has served on the Board of Directors for a number of health care organizations over the past 45 years, including Canadian Surgical Trade and National Distribution and Contracting (abco/NDC). His invaluable knowledge and commitment to improve the delivery of care across the health care continuum have been of great benefit to not only Medical Mart, but to many organizations across Canada.


Robert J. West, President & C.E.O.

Robert G. West, founded Medical Mart in 1978. In 1979, Robert J. West joined his father as Medical Mart’s first Primary Care Sales Representative, focussing on the physician market segment. Over the past 30 years, Rob has held a number of successive management positions including General Manager, responsible for the national business development and strategic planning of Medical Mart.

In his role today, Rob oversees the entire Canadian distribution business, including an extensive portfolio of over 80,000 health care products. A recipient of the President’s Award in 2007, Rob’s emphasis is on team building and employee development, in order to facilitate increased sales and efficiencies for the company, while enabling providers to improve the delivery of care, through Medical Mart’s value-added services.

Rob attended Coastal Carolina University, South Carolina, on a golf scholarship. He received his B.Sc. in Business Finance and Marketing. Rob is a graduate of the Canadian Surgical Trade Association / MEDEC Medical Surgical Supply Consultant Program.

Rob West currently holds board positions with Medical Mart and GS1 CareNet, where he is an executive member. Rob served on the National Distribution and Contracting (NDC) Board of Directors through the 2010 Recapitalization process, and is actively involved in various hospital foundation programs that raise funds through community sponsored golf events.

Rob resides in Burlington, Ontario with his wife, their two daughters and their two Bearded Collies.

Steve Currie, Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

Steve Currie has been the Chief Financial Officer of Medical Mart for over 10 years. An integral part of the Medical Mart executive team, Steve has helped guide the company’s financial future through sound economic forecasting and investment decision-making. For the past decade, Medical Mart has experienced significant growth and success under the financial direction of Steve and the executive team.

With over 30 years experience in the Health Care industry, and having held senior positions in both acute care hospital and long term care organizations, Steve brings a wealth of industry insight to the Medical Mart executive team. His consistent success in identifying financial opportunities has enabled Medical Mart to realize key efficiencies in several health care markets.

A Chartered Accountant, Steve also holds an Honours B.A. in Business Administration from Wilfred Laurier University and a Masters Degree in Health Sciences from the University of Toronto.

Steve currently resides in the city of Toronto. In his spare time, he enjoys playing golf.


Ken Kirby – Senior Vice President


With over 28 years experience in the health care distribution business, Ken Kirby brings a vast amount of industry expertise to the Medical Mart executive team. His experience providing business solutions for leading health care providers across the country has made Ken an invaluable member of Medical Mart.

In his current capacity, Ken oversees several key divisions of Medical Mart, including the Customer Service, Sales, Vendor, and Marketing groups. He is also responsible for managing profitability and branch operations nationally, and was the driving force behind Medical Mart’s expansion initiatives in both Atlantic and Western Canada.

Ken holds an Honours Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Wilfred Laurier University. He was also a recipient of the 2007 President’s Award for Medical Mart.

A resident of Paris, Ontario, Ken is married with two children and enjoys playing golf and watching NCAA football.

Don Berry – Executive Vice President Medical Mart West

Don Berry has been in a senior management role in the medical distribution business for 22 years. He graduated from York University (Political Science), Humber College (Business) and the University of British Columbia (Sales and Marketing Management).

Based in Edmonton, Alberta, Don is responsible for the business development of Medical Mart West, which began operations in 2002 to service the requirements of health care customers in Western Canada. He was a recipient of the 2007 President’s Award for Medical Mart.

Don is married and has two children. He has served on a number of local and provincial committees including the Alberta Heritage Foundation Medical Research technology assessment committee and Vice Chairman of Health Opportunities Metro Edmonton.

Dave Forte, Vice President – Sales & Marketing


Dave Forte has held a number of executive management and sales positions in the Health Care industry over the past 20 years. His natural ability to build both regional and national Sales and Marketing teams, based on a best-in-class customer relationship management philosophy, has resulted in the successful Long term Care sales growth for Medical Mart.

Today at Medical Mart, Dave’s collaborative management style and leadership have helped our company improve operational efficiencies, exceed service requirements for our customers and streamline the Medical Mart supply chain. His years of strategic business planning, combined with extensive marketing and sales experience in several health care markets, have enabled Dave to spearhead the enhancement of Medical Mart’s innovative product distribution model.

Dave also manages Specialty Furniture Inc. (SFI), a division of Medical Mart. His expertise in the health care furniture business enables him to provide valuable insight to providers who are furnishing their facilities.

Dave’s education and practical experience acquired throughout his career include executive sales and management courses, public speaking groups and business development programs.

A resident of Waterloo, Ontario, Dave spends his down time enjoying life with his wife and 5 children. Dave also enjoys playing golf and hockey in his spare time.

Peter Dennis, National Sales Manager – LTC

Peter Dennis has over 10 years experience building business relationships and improving product sales in the long term care and home health care markets. His significant exposure to these key health care markets has made Peter an invaluable member of the Medical Mart team.

Today, Peter remains focussed on delivering value to LTC customers across Canada. His motivational skills, experience and industry insight enable Peter and his team to sustain and grow our rapidly expanding customer base, by providing timely communication to our customers, regarding industry trends and LTC product information, on a consistent basis.

Peter graduated from Carleton University in Ottawa with a Bachelor of Arts in Geography and Geology.

Peter resides in Milton with his wife. He enjoys skiing, mountain biking and golfing in his spare time as well as relaxing with his family.

Craig Bethune, Vice President – Atlantic Canada

With over 20 years experience in the health care industry, Craig Bethune has held senior management positions for several leading national health care organizations. Today, Craig leads the Medical Mart Atlantic team in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, serving Maritime customers in the Acute Care Hospital, Primary Care and Long Term Care markets.

Craig’s extensive success in the areas of business development, customer service, sales and marketing have enabled the Medical Mart team to expand its service offering to Maritime customers and become one of the fastest growing medical supply companies in the country.

Majoring in Kinesiology, Craig graduated with a Bachelor of Science from Dalhousie University in Halifax. He then went on to get his Diploma in Respiratory Therapy.

Craig lives with his wife and three children in Halifax, Nova Scotia. An avid golfer, Craig has participated in, and chaired, several charity golf tournaments. He also enjoys tennis and cooking.

James Singh – Home Health Care Manager

A Certified Compression Therapy Fitter and Mobility Specialist, James Singh has been with the Medical Mart team for over 21 years. As the Home Health Care Manager of the Medical Mart retail store, he shares his knowledge and experience with Canadians every day.

James makes it his personal goal to mentor each member of his dedicated team, to ensure Medical Mart customers are given the highest quality service. Having been both a Retail Salesperson and a Territory Manager in the past, James brings a wealth of experience to our retail operations. He instills very high service standards within the Medical Mart store, making sure that every customer feels comfortable and receives the proper feedback, based on their unique health care needs.

James has received several awards including the President’s Award. He enjoys volunteering for both his local church and the Scott Mission.

James is very proud of his two children, Jamie and Jenna. In his spare time he enjoys tennis and basketball.

Petra Storm – Director – Support Services, Sales Coordinator-Acute Care

As a highly skilled sales and marketing professional with over ten years experience in both the Medical Supply / Distribution field and Clinical Contract Management industry, Petra Storm is an integral part of the Medical Mart support team. Petra’s exceptional performance record can be attributed to her outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, along with her strong work ethic and ability to learn quickly. She successfully develops and builds key business relationships for Medical Mart by leveraging creativity, efficiency and resourceful negotiation through the use of social intelligence.

Prior to pursuing her career, Petra obtained both her Honours Bachelor of Science and Master of Science from the University of Guelph. This education, combined with Petra’s experience, has provided a solid foundation for her role at Medical Mart, as Petra is able to offer invaluable insight regarding the evaluation of medical products for several health care sectors.

One of Petra’s main areas of focus is working closely with Canada’s two National GPOs – HealthPRO and Medbuy. These two organizations represent over $2 Billion Dollars of contracted business with Hospitals from coast to coast.

In her current role as Director of Support Services, Petra is the key point of contact for product inquiries for the Medical Mart Sales Team. She assists our Purchasing Team in the efficient management of inventory with key suppliers, while also facilitating negotiations for contract management and tender responses. She is also responsible for the Customer Service Group and ensuring that our Customers are well taken care of and that any issues are resolved in a timely manner.

Margaret Petley – Customer Service Manager

With over 32 years experience building and nurturing business relationships, Margaret Petley brings a wealth of knowledge to the Medical Mart Customer Service Team. Customers depend on Margaret and her team in assisting them with the replenishment of the over 80,000 products distributed by Medical Mart. As Customer Service Manager for Medical Mart, Margaret leads a team of twelve outstanding CSRs, as well as providing leadership support for CS at Medical Mart Atlantic and Medical Mart West, encouraging her group to focus on customer retention and loyalty through service excellence.

A hands-on leader and decision-maker, Margaret not only provides customer service training to her team, but leads by example every business day, teaching her CSRs the key principles of providing efficient and professional service, while problem solving in a fast-paced environment. So it’s not surprising to hear health care providers tell us “Margaret’s passion for excellent service is second to none”. In Margaret’s own words, “It’s my job…best-in-class service on every call.”

Originally from Montreal, she studied Psychology, English, and Languages at Vanier College, and is fluent in French. Prior to joining the Medical Mart team over 19 years ago, Margaret successfully managed Customer Service in the jewellery distribution industry for 13 years. Her continued pursuit of customer service and communications excellence has lead her to complete additional courses through Bell Canada and Dun & Bradstreet. Margaret has held her current position as Customer Service Manager at Medical Mart since 2004.
